Introduction
In a two or three year program, you will normally need to take a mix of prescribed and elective subjects: EAC150, business or technical writing (in most programs), a vocational general education subject (chosen for your program) and three electives (one or two liberal studies and one or two literature courses). These subjects complement your technical studies by further developing your communication skills and expanding your general knowledge.

“I
can’t get in!”
If your first choice of elective or class is not available
at registration time, keep checking on SIRIS up to the deadline
to add subjects in the first week of classes. Space often
opens up.
“My timetable has changed!”
Unfortunately, sometimes we need to make changes to subjects
and sections, so please make sure to check your timetable
on SIRIS at the beginning of every semester.
“Can I take the course at night or on weekends?”
Not if you are registered in the full-time program and there’s
space available in other daytime classes or electives (check
on SIRIS). Otherwise, yes. See your English and Liberal Studies coordinator.
“What about online courses?”
We have a growing number of elective and prescribed subjects
being offered online. If you choose an online subject, please go to my.senecacollege.ca and click on the course link to start the subject in the first week of classes. Expect
to do some assignments and the final exam onsite. Your professor
will be available for consultation online or onsite during
office hours.
"How do I know if it's an English literature elective?"
The subject is coded EAC or SES and does not have a 100 or 300 number.
"What about summer courses?"
Many English and Liberal Studies electives are
often offered in compressed mode in the summer semester (i.e.
for 6 hours a week either in the first seven weeks or in the
second seven weeks). Some electives are scheduled for 14 weeks.
Classes for required subjects are often taught by two professors
over the 14-week summer semester.

After first semester, use SIRIS, Seneca’s computerized
registration system, to check which English and Liberal Studies subjects are available in that semester and
to register for what you require.
If you are interested in taking a
prescribed subject (e.g. EAC150 or EAC394) online, please
see your E&LS coordinator
to see if one is available and if you qualify. |

English subjects have prerequisites and may themselves
be prerequisites for other English and/or program subjects,
as are some Liberal Studies subjects. Check the Subject
Catalogue for more complete information.
- EAC150 is a prerequisite for all Business English
(EAC/SES 39x) subjects and English (EAC/SES) electives.
- In some programs, the English elective is a prerequisite
for Business English.
