You may be able to use credits from other college or university courses to satisfy some of your English and Liberal Studies requirements.

  1. Fill out the top of the blue Advanced Standing form. Sign and date the form.

  2. Attach your official transcript (showing subjects, grades & hours of instruction) and detailed subject outlines.

  3. Hand in your application before the deadline* to Registration on your campus or directly to your Liberal Studies coordinator. (There is no need to stand in the queue at the beginning of the semester, unless you are applying for a first semester English or Liberal Studies subject.)

  4. Check on SIRIS to see which Advanced Standing credits you have received. If you have missed the deadline for credit to be applied to the current semester, the credit will show on your SIRIS transcript the following semester.

  5. Your application will be processed after receipt of your English Skills Assesment result.

In order to apply for Advanced Standing, you must have a grade of C (60%) or above in English and Liberal Studies subjects from another college or university. OACs or TOEFL will not be considered for Advanced Standing. A subject must be 40 hours or more to qualify. You must be able to demonstrate that the subject meets the level and learning outcomes required by the School of English and Liberal Studies.

Before taking a subject at another institution, it is best to check with your English & Liberal Studies coordinator that the subject would count as a credit towards your graduation.

Transcripts in other languages must be officially translated into English. They also require Canadian equivalency, which can be obtained through World Education Services at http://www.wes.org/ca or by calling 416-972-0070.

*** The Advanced Standing deadline is usually Day 9 of the semester. However, please note that if you get an Advanced Standing, you may be able to replace that subject with another Liberal Studies or program subject. To ensure that you are able to do this, submit your advanced standing application well before the deadline to add subjects – Day 5 of the semester.
